Honouring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring the future: Black History Month 2022

In December 1995, the House of Commons unanimously carried a motion put forward by the Honourable Jean Augustine to recognize Black History Month in Canada. Since then, this month of celebration aims to combat anti-Black racism by educating Canadians about the rich contributions of Black people to society, which, unfortunately, have been either downplayed, ignored, or hidden from historical narratives.

It’s fair to say we have come a long way since December 1995, with overt racial discrimination becoming ever more unacceptable and a global consciousness becoming more aware of systemic racism. But there’s still room to grow.

To increase our knowledge and understanding of the contributions of Black Canadians, CRRF will feature 28 heroes from across the country who have sacrificed so much to make this country a better place for not just Black people but the entire country. We will also highlight the works of Black Canadian authors who, with their prose, have helped illuminate the Black experience in this country. We will assist you in testing your knowledge by sharing trivia on Black historical events.  Later in the month, CRRF will host a webinar to introduce you to several Black community organizations from across the country working tirelessly toward the goal of racial justice.

Black history is all of our histories. This month renews our interest in remembering those who laid the groundwork for change. Their contributions are part of our collective legacy. Honouring that history and their legacies is all of our responsibility— this February and beyond.
