Canadian Race Relations Foundation Welcomes Funding Announcement
Today, as part of Federal Budget 2024, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Finance, made the landmark announcement that the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) will receive permanent, ongoing funding from the Government of Canada.
This news marks a monumental milestone in Canada’s journey to address systemic racism in this country, and will enable the CRRF to continue to collaborate with communities across Canada to build a better future together, through initiatives like the National Anti-Racism Fund (NARF), the national Hate Crimes Task Force, and ongoing community exchange, research and fellowships.
The CRRF will receive $45 million over five years, and $9 million ongoing starting in 2025/26 to build the capacity of the Foundation. In addition, the Government will invest $18 million over six years and $3 million ongoing for a standalone community information resource hub to tackle hate in Canada.
“Permanent funding will fundamentally change the landscape of possibilities for antiracism work in Canada. This commitment creates unprecedented new possibilities for communities across the country to work together to strengthen our social fabric, combat racism and hate, and foster a society built on equity and inclusion in sustainable, long-term ways. We look forward to the work ahead”
Mohammed Hashim, CEO and Executive Director of the CRRF
“Today’s announcement catapults Canada into a promising future with unprecedented opportunities for transformative change. With this support, we stand on the threshold of a new era, with greater potential than ever before to build a solid infrastructure of equity, justice, and boundless opportunity for all, for generations to come”
Teresa Woo-Paw, Chairperson of the CRRF
The CRRF extends its gratitude to the Government of Canada and Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, the Honourable Kamal Khera for upholding and demonstrating their commitment to this crucial work.
