Webinar: Is Criticizing Immigration Racist?

A new webinar in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21

Canada is one of the most multicultural countries globally, where more than one in five people is an immigrant. Immigrants have contributed to Canadian society in every way, from politics to the arts to science to industry. But in every generation, there has been a recurring wave of criticism of immigration in Canada. So, we ask this simple question: is criticizing immigration a debate around the efficacy of immigration policy, or is attacking immigration or criticizing specific immigrants masking a deeper problem that centres around race and ethnicity?

The Canadian Race Relations Foundation, in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, is pleased to present a stimulating debate on the topic of the acceptance of immigration in Canada and the legitimacy of its criticism throughout history.

Panelists include:

  • Mr. Liban Abokor, Executive Director, Youth LEAPS
  • Dr. Rohini Bannerjee, Associate Professor, Saint Mary’s University
  • Mr. Carey Newman, Audain Professor, Univerisity of Victoria

Award-winning journalist and podcaster Hannah Sung will moderate this event.

This webinar will take place on Friday, April 9th at 1PM EST, 2PM AST and 10AM PST.
