Black History Month 2026
Black History Month is a time to honour the leadership, and contributions of Black communities across Canada. It is also a time to reflect on the systems that continue to shape the lives of Black Canadians today.
In 2025, the federal government announced a 10-year plan to put Canada’s Black Justice Strategy into action – a major step toward addressing systemic racism and the lack of societal supports to prevent the over-representation of Black people in Canada’s justice system. The strategy outlines 114 recommendations across policing, courts, corrections, and social supports, recognizing that real justice reform must be comprehensive, coordinated, and rooted in community leadership.
The strategy is a critical first step. But its successful implementation calls on all of us to move from intention to measurable action, grounded in partnership and equity. It also requires close attention to the policies, accountability mechanisms, and governance structures needed to turn commitments into lasting change.
This February, as part of our Finding Common Ground National Town Hall series, the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) will host a webcast with the Globe and Mail, Foundation for Black Communities (FFBC) and Black Opportunity Fund, to dive into the implementation of Canada’s Black Justice Strategy, featuring key government and community leaders from across Canada to discuss how and when the recommendations will be implemented, along with strategies to support effective communication, engagement and accountability.
Building trust takes sustained and meaningful engagement with Black communities, ensuring lived experience informs policy, and investing in long-term, community-led solutions. Accountability, collaboration, and equity must remain at the centre to ensure system change leads to real and lasting impact.
This year, the CRRF was proud to support 18 Black History Month events across the country that highlight and celebrate the work and achievements of Black communities in Canada.
