Navigating New Horizons: The Contributions and Perspectives of Multicultural Canadians
The Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) is pleased to support new research from Imagine Canada that examines the levels of giving among Canada’s six largest minority groups, the causes they support, their motivations for donating, and the factors that may limit their contributions.
Conducted online in early 2024, the survey polled residents of Canada from South Asian, Chinese, Afro-Caribbean/African, Filipino, Arab, and West Asian backgrounds, and found that many are motivated by the desire to help others, but various barriers – including financial constraints and feelings of exclusion – impact their ability to contribute more.
The first report, released in November 2024, focuses on how recent demographic trends and the experiences of multicultural Canadians in coming to Canada affect their giving, attitudes and beliefs about charitable organizations.
The second report, released in April 2025, explores the giving behaviours of multicultural Canadians in more depth by examining new thematic areas such as donation methods, the role of multicultural media, intentionality in giving, and the potential for greater support.
These reports build on an earlier study undertaken by Imagine Canada in 2020.
For the purposes of this study, multicultural Canadians are defined as people from visible minority groups who are either non-permanent residents, permanent residents, naturalized citizens or Canadian-born, have significant potential as contributors to the non-profit sector.
